Overview of the Position
The SUSTAIN Eco project will be led by IUCN, with SNV and AWF responsible for leading implementation in the Sumbawanga landscape (SNV) and the Kilombero landscape (AWF). The project runs for three years. SNV’s work will focus on six districts (Sumbawanga, Mpanda, Kalambo, Nkasi, Tanganyika, and Nsimbo) in Sumbawanga and Rukwa regions.
Currently the project is looking for a senior Agronomist Intern who will be responsible for implementing and supervising agroforestry nurseries, agroforestry farms, and farmer field schools (FFS) for Maize, Sunflower, Beans, Horticulture and Paddy. The growing season normally starts in November to February of each year. The demo plots/Farmer field schools are an integral part for environmental conservation practices, aiming to showcase best practices and innovative techniques to farmers. The Agronomist Intern will play a critical role in the successful implementation of these plots by ensuring proper cultivation, data collection, and analysis throughout the growing season
Job Description
Preparation and Planning:
Assisting in planning and designing the demo plots/farmers field schools for Maize, Sunflower, Beans, horticulture and Paddy.
Collaborating with government extension officers at ward or villages levels to establish optimal growing conditions and planting schedules.
Cultivation and Maintenance:
Overseeing the planting, cultivation, and maintenance of the farmer field schools and agroforestry nurseries and farms.
Supervise and monitor agroforestry nurseries and ensure smooth transplantation of seedlings into farmer’s land
Monitoring and managing irrigation, fertilization, and pest control in collaboration with government extension officers.
Data Collection and Analysis:
Collecting data on growth rates, yield, and other relevant metrics such resistant to drought/ diseases.
Analysing the collected data to identify trends and insights for improving crop management practices.
Documentation and Reporting:
Documenting all activities related to the demo plots/FFS, agroforestry nurseries and farms including challenges encountered and solutions implemented.
Conduct Farmers field day’s events to share the success and challenges of the FFS with the communities
Preparing regular progress reports and presentations for review and dissemination to stakeholders
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in agriculture general, agronomy, horticulture, agriculture extension or equivalent.
Two years of working experiences with practical experience on agronomy activities.
Working in projects related to natural resource management, conservation, or environmental management in Tanzania.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
Willing to stay and work in Rukwa and Katavi regions
