Job Summary: The job holder is responsible for providing health services to students when they are at school – treat injuries and mild to acute sickness, and support learners with chronic illnesses. This role includes managing health records, ensuring compliance with health regulations, and creating a safe and healthy school environment.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

●       Assess and provide basic healthcare to learners in case of minor injuries and illnesses.

●       Administer prescribed medications according to physicians’ instructions and parent consent.

●       Develop health plans for learners with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

●       Maintain up-to-date and confidential health records for all learners.

●       Respond to medical emergencies and administer first aid or CPR, and coordinating with emergency service providers as needed.

●       Create a clean and comfortable sickbay area.

●       Keep track of learners’ vaccination records.

●       Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases).

●       Contacting parents when learners are ill or injured.

●       Work closely with teachers and parents to ensure learners’ well-being.

●       Determining when children might need additional care from a physician or specialist.

●       Ensure compliance with government health laws.

●       Educate learners, families, and staff about health-related topics, including nutrition, hygiene, safety, and disease prevention.

●       Participate in the development and implementation of school wellness policies and initiatives.

●       Prepare and submit detailed weekly reports on health office activities.

 

Key Skills and Competencies

●       Holder of Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing from a recognized institution.

●       Be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya and be in possession of a valid practicing license.

●       Working experience as a school or a regular nurse.

●       First Aid certification.

●       Knowledge in basic Occupational Health and Safety.

●       Ability to identify and respond to learners’ needs.

●       Strong assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.

●       High level of integrity.

●       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with learners, parents, and colleagues.

●       Excellent listening and problem-solving skills.

●       Warm, caring, patient and compassionate.

●       Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.

●       Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
