Position Summary
Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a Research officer to join the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) Dar es Salaam Node. The RO will play a significant and strategic role of continuously assisting core researchers improving the data science capability while contributing to the development of analytical models, preparation of input data, deployment of workflows, and dissemination of results, including writing reports, papers for peer reviewed publication, poster preparations and engaging with relevant collaborators. The ROs in addition to playing the supporting role, are expected to lead, design and implement small projects with deliverables contributing to the overall objective and scope of MAP project.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Undertake and support literature reviews, data searches and data extraction, including extraction of needed metrics for modelling work from published literature and official reports.
- Obtain, manage, and conduct preliminary processing and analysis on a variety of datasets.
- Utilize software including Excel, ArcGIS/QGIS, STATA, and R, Python and others to examine, manipulate, analyze and process data, create graphs, reports, maps, and, creating other visualizations of results.
- Select, follow, and adapt data extraction and manipulation protocols.
- Promote the best practice on use of data and conduct analytics by being responsible with others for general IT housekeeping, maintenance of back-ups, documentation of protocols, data processing procedures, and review of procedures.
- Take reasonable care for your own safety and health and avoid harming the safety and health of others through any act or omission at work.
- Identify and assess workplace hazards and apply hazard controls.
- Report every workplace injury, illness or near miss, no matter how insignificant they seem.
- Abide by institutional policies and procedures.
Qualification and Experience
- Minimum requirement is completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area i.e., statistics, mathematics, data/computer science/engineering, or similar quantitative discipline.
- Strong computer, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in managing, analyzing, interpreting, wrangling and manipulating data using a variety of software platforms; Skills on use of R software is essential for this role.
- Excellent levels of numeracy as evidenced through your experience and/or education with the ability to use numerical analysis methods and perform computations.
- Ability to communicate (verbal and written) in the English language.
- Demonstrated ability to keep attention to details, self-scrutinize outputs.
- Proven project and time management abilities.
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal supervision.
Skills and Competencies
- An understanding of the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and other infectious diseases, public health.
- Experience of working with spatial data and geometry files using GIS tools.
- Ability and experience to write codes in R-studio, develop packages and dashboards.
- Interest for career development including joining MSc or PhD program in advanced modeling.
- Experience in development and/or delivering training for different audiences.
- Knowledge of other languages including Swahili, French, Spanish, Portuguese.
