Job Title: Fleet Manager

Location: Tanzania

Reports to: General Manager

Job Summary

The Fleet Manager will be responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of our fleet of large vehicles. This role requires hands-on experience managing heavy-duty vehicles and a solid technical background in vehicle maintenance. The ideal candidate will ensure that all vehicles are maintained to the highest safety and performance standards while optimizing fleet operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fleet Operations Management:
    • Oversee day-to-day operations for a fleet of large vehicles, including scheduling, routing, and driver assignment.
    • Implement strategies to maximize vehicle utilization, minimize downtime, and ensure on-time deliveries.
    • Monitor key performance metrics (fuel consumption, vehicle utilization, maintenance costs, etc.) and implement improvements.
  • Maintenance & Technical Oversight:
    • Develop, implement, and manage a preventive and corrective maintenance program for heavy-duty vehicles.
    • Collaborate closely with mechanics, technicians, and external service providers to diagnose issues and ensure timely repairs.
    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules, inspections, and repairs.
    • Ensure compliance with all safety, regulatory, and environmental standards.
  • Budget & Resource Management:
    • Manage the fleet maintenance budget and allocate resources effectively to balance cost control with operational efficiency.
    • Forecast maintenance needs and plan for capital expenditures on new equipment or technology upgrades.
  • Driver Management & Training:
    • Supervise and support drivers to ensure they adhere to company policies and road safety regulations.
    • Develop training programs focused on safe driving practices and basic vehicle maintenance checks.
    • Address driver concerns and resolve issues to maintain a high level of morale and performance.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety:
    • Keep abreast of industry standards, local and international regulations governing heavy vehicle operations.
    • Ensure that all vehicles are compliant with licensing, insurance, and inspection requirements.
    • Conduct regular audits and inspections to uphold safety standards across the fleet.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Logistics, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing large vehicle fleets.
    • Demonstrated expertise in vehicle maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting for heavy-duty vehicles.
    • Experience in developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs.
    • Proven track record of optimizing fleet operations in a dynamic environment.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and maintenance best practices for large vehicles.
    • Proficiency with fleet management software and maintenance scheduling tools.
    • Familiarity with regulatory and safety standards relevant to the transportation and logistics industry.
  • Additional Skills:
    • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
    • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams (drivers, mechanics, and management).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Automotive or Heavy Vehicle Maintenance.
  • Experience operating in or knowledge of the Tanzanian logistics and transportation market.
  • Prior experience in cost management and budgeting within a fleet operations context.
