The position

Role Purpose

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will oversee and drive the strategic financial management of Aga Khan Foundation Tanzania (AKFT), ensuring the organization’s long-term financial sustainability and compliance with international financial standards. The CFO will provide strategic leadership on financial matters, oversee risk management, ensure compliance with statutory regulations, and play a critical role in decision-making as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

Scope of Role

The CFO at AKF Tanzania will play a vital role in shaping and leading the financial strategy and. Ensuring compliance with global policies, donor requirements, and local regulations, while overseeing budgeting, forecasting, risk management, and financial reporting The CFO will develop the finance team across offices, collaborate with program teams to align finances with delivery, and engage with stakeholders, including donors and government bodies, to ensure accountability and resource sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

Lead the development and implementation of the financial strategy in alignment with AKFT’s strategic goals and priorities.

Provide financial insights to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team to drive sustainable growth and operational excellence

Represent AKFT on financial matters with external stakeholders, including donors, external auditors, government authorities, and regional/global leadership.

Financial Planning and Management

Oversee annual budget preparation, financial forecasting, and resource allocation across programs and departments, and affiliated entities

Monitor the organization’s financial performance, ensuring efficiency and value for money.

Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of financial reports for management, donors, and regulatory bodies.

Optimize the organization’s cash flow and treasury management, ensuring sufficient liquidity for operations.

Risk Management and Compliance

Identify and mitigate financial risks by implementing robust internal controls and compliance frameworks.

Ensure adherence to statutory laws, tax regulations, donor requirements, and GAAP/IFRS accounting standards.

Oversee all audits (internal, external, and donor-specific) and ensure the timely resolution of audit findings.

Grants and Donor Management

Ensure compliance with donor agreements, including budget adherence and accurate financial reporting.

Strengthen grant management processes and ensure alignment with organizational and donor requirements, working closely with partnership and programme leads. Ensure financial systems and reporting provide meaningful and actionable information for partner management.

Team Leadership and Capacity Building

Manage and mentor the finance team, promoting a high-performance culture and professional growth.

Provide leadership and training to build the team’s technical and operational capacity in financial management.

Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Systems and Process Improvement

Oversee the implementation and enhancement of financial management systems and tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Ensure internal reporting, including management, governance, and HQ reporting are developed, reviewed, and submitted in a timely manner.

Lead the digital transformation of finance operations to enhance transparency, data security, efficiency, and reporting.

The requirements

Educational Background

Master’s degree in finance, Business Administration, or related discipline

Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, or CIMA is mandatory.

Professional Experience

At least 10 years of progressive experience in financial management and local commercial knowledge, with 5+ years in senior leadership roles.

Demonstrated experience in managing complex budgets and multiple grants, including donor compliance.

Proven track record of successful audits and financial reporting in international development contexts.

Experience in risk management, treasury, and investment strategies.

Skills and Competencies

Strategic thinking and financial acumen with the ability to balance long-term goals with operational demands.

Exceptional leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills.

Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

Advanced knowledge of accounting software and financial management systems (e.g., Pivot Tables, Microsoft Business Central (BC)).

Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial information to non-financial audiences.
